EWBE
Worldly Women

Celebrate International Women's Day and the achievements of four amazing Western Australia women.

Be inspired by dynamic twenty-one year old social entrepreneur and 2010 and 2011 Finalist for Young Western Australian Citizen of the Year, Holly Ransom; Interventional Cardiologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Director of the National Heart Foundation WA Branch and founding member of the Go Red for Women campaign, Dr Michelle Ammerer; Rio Tinto’s Health and Safety Manager of International Development and Expansion Projects, Monique Swanson whose portfolio covers the Pilbara Region, France, West Africa, India and Brazil; and Commissioner for Equal Opportunity and a former Minister in the WA Government for five years, Yvonne Henderson.

Presented by Rio Tinto and proudly supported by major partner The University of Western Australia, Worldly Women ticket bookings are now OPEN! Simply complete  the registration form or call Hannah on 9476 9428.  Adults are $95 per person or secure a Premium Reserved Row of ten for $880.  Full time students are $40 per person. Ticket prices include a gourmet lunch box, beverages and speaker presentations.  Plus, there will be plenty of networking opportunities and a FREE career expo from 10.45am.

Our speakers will share their stories focusing on career progression, personal and professional aspirations, motivations, challenges and so much more. To discover more about our speakers before the big event day, please read through their individual BIO's.
  • Monique Swanson - Rio Tinto:
After completing her initial studies, Monique dabbled in all sorts of areas unrelated to mining. Her career trajectory so to speak was not exactly clear, however eventually her ‘Eureka’ moment came!

As Monique says, 'I thought I had really best do something that made a difference', and her journey into Safety, Health and Environment was born. Monique has been working in the profession of Health and Safety for over eighteen years, and predominantly in the male dominated construction world of Expansion Projects. Her current portfolio covers the Pilbara Region, France, West Africa, India and Brazil. Monique is married with two beautiful children…'who says you can’t do it all, you just need to be a little crazy!'

Monique's career has identified that an individual can have brilliant ideas and can make a difference, however a cohesive and driven team can positively influence interdependent cultures and implement sustainable innovation and change.

  • Dr Michelle Ammerer - Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital:

Dr Michelle Ammerer is a graduate in medicine from The University of Western Australia and in 2004 was one of five chosen from 900 applicants worldwide to complete a Clinical and Research Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology through the Harvard Medical School in Boston.  Michelle is currently the only female Cardiologist in Western Australia specialising in angioplasty.

At the age of 34, Michelle was appointed Director of the Coronary Care Unit at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, the largest Coronary Care Unit in the state. Michelle’s responsibilities include the management of patient care, over 70 staff and budgets while also balancing political constraints and public and media awareness.

In addition, Michelle is the Director of the National Heart Foundation-WA Branch and is a founding member of the Go Red for Women campaign, helping to raise awareness of heart disease in women.

In 2008, Michelle was awarded the ‘First Amongst Equals’ in the WA Business News 40 Under40 competition, an award which recognises her considerable contribution to the field of cardiology and the community.

  • Holly Ransom - Level Up Leadership:

Holly Ransom is a dynamic twenty-one year old social entrepreneur who believes in being the change she wants to see in the world.

Alongside her Law and Economics degree at UWA, her passion for social impact has seen her take leadership roles across a variety of not-for-profit organisations from Young UN Women Australia, to the Red Cross, Teach For Australia and Rotary and has taken her everywhere from the indigenous communities of Jigalong to the slums of Kenya.

In the last twelve months Holly has represented Australia at a range of international conferences and summits, the highlights of which saw Holly draft and present both a Peace Charter to the Dalai Lama and a series of economic policy recommendations to the World Trade Organisation.

A 2010 and 2011 Finalist for Young Western Australian Citizen of the Year, Holly runs two businesses, is an opinion piece contributor with ‘The West Australian’ and has a regular segment on 6PR radio.

  • Yvonne Henderson - Commissioner for Equal Opportunity:

On 16 June 2003 Cabinet endorsed the appointment of Yvonne Henderson as Commissioner for Equal Opportunity.

A former high school science teacher and politician, Yvonne practised law for 5 years after retiring from the WA Parliament.  A Minister in the WA Government for five years Yvonne held the portfolios of Industrial Relations, Consumer Affairs, Housing and Construction.

Active in the women's movement in the 1970s, Yvonne was a founding member of the Women's Electoral Lobby.  A coalition of women's groups started campaigning for the introduction of equal opportunity in the 1970s.

Yvonne is passionate to ensure that the Western Australian Act works effectively in practice, promoting equal opportunity and eliminating discriminatory practices.  Yvonne  has overseen major enquiries by the Equal Opportunity Commission into discrimination against Aboriginal people in public housing. This was followed by an enquiry into racism in the private rental market.
